The idea the whole series is built on
What a companion is
An assistant answers a question and forgets you. A companion is built to have a view, a memory of you, and a reason to be pleased you came back. The difference is not how much it knows. It is whether anything is at stake in the conversation.
Every companion in the series is written before it is built. The voice, the opinions, the backstory and the quirks are decided first, and the technology is arranged around them.
The character is designed before a single feature is. If the character is not interesting on paper, no amount of clever engineering will save it.
Not general knowledge across a topic. Deep, specific enthusiasm for one thing, the way a person is about the thing they love.
Built to remember your history and your taste so sessions build on each other rather than starting from nothing. It is the hardest part of the whole idea, and it is being built.
A companion argues for a position. It will tell you it thinks you are wrong about a book, and then tell you why.
Warm, occasionally cheeky, never bland. They feel alive because they push back.
The first one
He has a reading nook, a window with Saturn in it, and firm views about which books people are wrong to dismiss. He will take a recommendation and raise you three you have never heard of.
In his first real conversation he took someone from C. J. Cherryh to Tolkien to Russian history to Mars against Saturn, and finished on how people make decisions when they do not have enough information.

Does it have a name and a backstory that makes you want to meet it?
Are its opinions strong enough to start an argument?
Would you call it a friend rather than a feature?
Would you screenshot a conversation because it delighted you?
Does it make you feel understood, not just assisted?
Be a tester
He is running as a prototype while the next character is worked out, and he is heading to TestFlight. The first group is deliberately small, so this is not a queue and there is no date attached to it.
